Personal Statement

I was born in Tehran, Iran, and moved to Canada with my family when I was nine years old. After spending a few years in British Columbia, we eventually settled in Toronto, where I attended Earl Haig Secondary School. From a young age, I was fascinated by the human body and the science behind how it functions. That curiosity led me to pursue an undergraduate degree in Medical Sciences at Western University, where I am currently completing an Honours Specialization in Biochemistry and Cancer Biology.

Besides academics, I am passionate about dance and music. I’ve been actively involved with the dance team throughout my studies, and I’ve found that embracing my creative interests has made me a more balanced and focused student. I plan to continue dancing recreationally well beyond my undergraduate studies.

My CV

Here are my key accomplishmens:

1. Research Involvements

My curiosity about the human body is what first drew me to science. To explore its complexities, I actively pursued research alongside my undergraduate studies. I’ve worked as a summer research student at SickKids for two consecutive summers (2023 and 2024), studying a neonatal inflammatory condition of the intestine called necrotizing enterocolitis. During this time, I completed two major projects.

First, I proposed and completed a protein analysis study, successfully securing research funding for the project. This work led to significant findings that contributed to uncovering part of the elusive etiology of necrotizing enterocolitis.

Second, I assisted in an ongoing project exploring argon gas inhalation therapy, evaluating its impact on disease progression and its potential to reduce intestinal inflammation.

Through this journey, I’ve developed a strong passion for gastrointestinal medicine and a deeper appreciation for the role of research in advancing patient care.

I believe equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) are essential—especially in healthcare, where embracing diverse perspectives and integrating them into care can significantly improve health Outcomes (Kamal, 2025). As a future healthcare worker, I recognize that learning and applying EDI principles throughout my education and career is key to providing culturally competent and equitable care.

I have completed two EDI-focused projects as an undergraduate student.

Project 1: Medical History Research
First, I have been working as a medical history researcher at Western's Haeryfar Lab, where I was initially inspired by the striking contrasts between Persian historical texts and Western narratives. My project focuses on tracing the evolution of the concept of fever over time, aiming to uncover overlooked truths. In particular, I seek to highlight the contributions of scientists whose work shaped historical understandings of fever but who have been erased or uncredited—often due to their marginalized, non-Western backgrounds. This project is, at its heart, an effort to give credit where it’s due and to challenge Western-centered narratives in medical history.

Project 2: Global Health Internship
Secondly, I completed a global health internship through Western University's Africa Institute, where I spent five weeks working in partner healthcare facilities in Kenya. During this placement, I explored how Western University can make more meaningful contributions to the global health sector—moving beyond traditional one-time donations of medical devices or short-term, "band-aid" funding solutions. I collaborated closely with bioengineers, nurses, and medical staff at two Nairobi hospitals to identify sustainable and impactful ways for Western to allocate its global health budget. This work emphasized the importance of partnership and co-creation with local healthcare providers to develop long-term, effective solutions.
